In early eras there was no pharmaceutical cartel to "control" the information. Regarding wild oregano consider the ancient Greeks. They called this plant the "delight" or "pleasure" of the mountains oreganos. Thus, they realized its essential nature for human health. This authority maintained by wild oregano is proven by the discovery of an ancient Grecian shipwreck off the coast of Chios in the Aegean Sea. Incredibly, the cargo of the shipwreck was mainly olive oil flavored with wild oregano.
Again, this was the entire cargo. It consisted of amphora containing an oregano-infused olive oil, which was distinct to the people of Chios. There were some 350 such amphora found on the wreck. The shipwreck was about 2400y ears old. This was precious cargo, which proves that for this ancient society, which boasts the still-admired Hippocrates or "father of medicine," food is truly the best medicine.

That oregano oil is lifesaving has been known for centuries. In this modern era research began regarding its powers early in the 20th century. In 1910 it was W. H. Martindale who determined the ultimate power of wild oregano. After extensive research he stated categorically that "the essential oil of oregano is the most powerful plant-derived antiseptic known." It was Martindale who first showed that oregano oil is 26 times more potent than synthetic phenol, then known as carbolic acid. Thus, clearly, there is no drug nor even categories of drugs which can match such power. In fact, the relatively weak carbolic acid was the drug or synthetic version of carvacrol and thymol, the main active ingredients of oregano oil.
