The low-down on lifting with Mike by Ted Roach
I started lifting with Mike Brown
in September of 2002 at a body weight of 175. By late August of 2003 I had
reached a weight of 215 pounds. By following Mike's training methods I had
gained 40 pounds of mostly muscle in less than one year.
I had been lifting on my own since 1993
and never had managed to make it past 175 pounds. The program I was on
before I met Mike was pretty much your stereotypical bodybuilding
program--6 days a week for about 3 hours a day. It left me perpetually
sore, exhausted, and my joints ached frequently.
Mike put me on a program where we did
our main workouts only twice a week and he let me work calves, forearms,
neck, and abs whenever I wanted since those muscles recover faster than
the rest. Our workouts very rarely lasted over an hour and a half. I
almost quit working out with him multiple times because I found it hard to
believe that I was going to get bigger by working less.
After a short while I discovered that
by not overtraining, focusing more on working the muscles in groups rather
than isolating them, and eating hordes of natural, nutritional foods that
I was making more progress with less time. We simply went to the gym,
trained hard and right and got out, then ate, and ate, and ate some more.
The only type of supplement I ever took while training with Mike was Mits'
protein mixed with a banana, coconut milk, and pineapple juice. I had
switched to Mits' protein after I ran out of whey protein and gained 10
pounds in one week.
Another thing Mike focused on was the
prevention of injuries which I thought was important because if you're
injured, you can't even lift in the first place. In my old training style
I had an attitude that if I felt pain I would just deal with it. Mike
taught me that if I wanted my body to function at top performance I would
have to treat it like a high performance racecar and keep every little
thing tuned to perfection. I found this attitude to pay off after I had
complained about a very minor pain in my neck, Mike recommended me to a
chiropractor. After only one session of getting my spine straightened out,
my bench press went up 30 pounds only two days later. The amazing thing
about Mike is that he can do the things he does at his age without getting
injured, which is the main reason I stuck with his training program.
In conclusion, if you want to get big,
strong, and be healthy, while staying clean and uninjured, listen to what
Mike Brown has to say. He is a genuine badass from the old school of
lifting and knows what he is talking about.
