"An intelligent, balanced approach to exercise and fitness." - Michael J. Gelb, author of Body Learning Thin-but-fit supermodels like Amber Valletta and Shalom Harlow and actresses like Courtney Thorne-Smith and Liv Tyler swear by Pilates workouts to keep their figures toned and flexible. The Pilates Body is the latest in a string of books dedicated to this fitness program, which is now soaring in popularity nearly 100 years after it was first developed by Joseph Pilates in Germany in the early 1900s. While today's Pilates studios take advantage of patented and intimidating-looking equipment that costs thousands of dollars (and therefore charge accordingly for private sessions), each exercise in The Pilates Body can be performed with just an exercise mat. While all parts of the body are used in the exercises, the focus is on the abdominals, or "powerhouse," which support the back; this makes Pilates an ideal exercise for those with back problems--or those hoping to prevent them.
Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal by Eric Schlosser Schlosser's investigation reaches its frightening peak in the meatpacking plants as he reveals the almost complete lack of federal oversight of a seemingly lawless industry. His searing portrayal of the industry is disturbingly similar to Upton Sinclair's The Jungle, written in 1906: nightmare working conditions, union busting, and unsanitary practices that introduce E. coli and other pathogens into restaurants, public schools, and homes. Almost as disturbing is his description of how the industry "both feeds and feeds off the young," insinuating itself into all aspects of children's lives, even the pages of their school books, while leaving them prone to obesity and disease. Fortunately, Schlosser offers some eminently practical remedies.

![]() Journalist Mark Bowden delivers a strikingly detailed account of the 1993 nightmare operation in Mogadishu that left 18 American soldiers dead and many more wounded. This early foreign-policy disaster for the Clinton administration led to the resignation of Secretary of Defense Les Aspin and a total troop withdrawal from Somalia. Bowden does not spend much time considering the context; instead he provides a moment-by-moment chronicle of what happened in the air and on the ground. His gritty narrative tells of how Rangers and elite Delta Force troops embarked on a mission to capture a pair of high-ranking deputies to warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid only to find themselves surrounded in a hostile African city. Their high-tech MH-60 Black Hawk helicopters had been shot down and a number of other miscues left them trapped through the night. Bowden describes Mogadishu as a place of Mad Max-like anarchy--implying strongly that there was never any peace for the supposed peacekeepers to keep. He makes full use of the defense bureaucracy's extensive paper trail--which includes official reports, investigations, and even radio transcripts--to describe the combat with great accuracy, right down to the actual dialogue. He supplements this with hundreds of his own interviews, turning Black Hawk Down into a completely authentic nonfiction novel, a lively page-turner that will make readers feel like they're standing beside the embattled troops. This will quickly be realized as a modern military classic. --John J. Miller From Rage to Responsibility: Black Conservative Jesse Lee Peterson and America Today From Rage to Responsibility: Black Conservative Jesse Lee Peterson and America Today is a no-holds- barred analysis of contemporary liberalism and the havoc it is wreaking in American culture. From race to abortion, to feminism, immigration and education, the ideas and public policies produced by the Left are hindering self-government and damaging lives, say Peterson and Stetson. God Struck Me Dead : Voices of Ex-Slaves (The William Bradford Collection from the Pilgrim Press) Featuring a preface by Paul Radin, renowned authority on religion and with a new intoduction by Princeton's Albert Raboteau, this collection includes six brief autobiographies of ex-slaves and offers a rich, emotionally-charged resource of spiritual and political liberation--a window into the soul of America. William Bradford's Of Plymouth Plantation is a remarkable work by a man who himself was something of a marvel. It remains one of the most readable seventeenth-century American books, attractive to us as much for its artfulness as for its high seriousness, the work of a good storyteller with interlligence and wit. Edited, with an Introduction, by Francis Murphy. Mourt's Relation: A Journal of the Pilgrims at Plymouth is an excellent book. The unknown author (presumed as Mourt) describes in detail the accounts of life during the settlement of the Pilgrims. Their travels to find a home and the actual settling are fascinating and well described. I will never think of the Pilgrims or indigenous peoples the same way again. The language is archaic, but if you like colonial history, you'll enjoy this book. Mysterious Lights and Crop Circles by Linda Moulton Howe Linda Moulton Howe shares and analyzes her research findings surrounding accounts of crop circles, accompanied by lights and crackling sounds over the past 2 years. Linda interviews a biophysicist, a mathematician, a geologist, and other researchers to determine the authenticity of these accounts and whether these crop circles are a 3-dimensional language related to fractional math, geometrics, the Hebrew Kabala, or other symbolic mysteries, and what they could mean. The Coming Global Superstorm by Art Bell and Whitley Strieber Art Bell and Whitley Strieber bring environmentalism to the masses tabloid-style in The Coming Global Superstorm, a quick look at global warming and its potentially catastrophic effects. Like Old Testament prophets, Bell and Strieber embrace lovingly detailed depictions of global cataclysm; unlike them, our modern-day doomsayers have more to go on than that old-time religion. Their writing is clear and straightforward, interspersing hard data with dramatization and speculation to create an engaging, enjoyable, but thoroughly spooky warning of the next Ice Age.
The beautiful music and Roma Downey's soft Irish accent, blend so wonderfully. These tracks are a mix of prayers and poems. Some written by Phil Coulter, others adapted from old Celtic prayers and other texts. There is something here for almost every human need--from loss of a father as in "The Old Man", or death of a spouse as in "Till Death do us Part". "In Perfect Harmony" would be perfect to play at a wedding. "My Little Angel" is about a parents love for their child. It is so moving and touches the soul. The whole album makes you feel glad to be alive, and even during the worst that life can bring, it provides healing and hope. The healing vibrations of this harp music will make you feel as though you've had a brain massage! The cells of your body as well as your ears respond to music. The invisible energy of the harp, which is one of the oldest known musical instruments used for healing, can change the electrical activity of the brain. The selections on this album are a mixture of classical, popular, new age, religious and improvisation, all weaving together to achieve the positive vibrations for achieving peace and healing. Celtic Mist with quiet moods from ancient lands provides soothing music to help relieve the stress of the day. Strictly Ballroom [Original Recording Remastered] [Soundtrack] Hemi-Sync is a patented and scientifically proven audio-guidance technology developed by The Monroe Institute and refined with over 40 years of research. Researchers learned that specific sound patterns could lead the brain to various states of consciousness ranging from deep relaxation or sleep to expanded awareness and other "extraordinary" states. The audio-guidance process works by sending different sounds (tones) to each ear with stereo headphones. The two hemispheres of the brain then act in unison to "hear" a third signal-the difference between the two tones. This is not an actual sound, but an electrical signal that can only be perceived within the brain by both brain hemispheres working together. The result is a focused, whole-brain state known as hemispheric synchronization or "Hemi-Sync." Different Hemi-Sync signals are used to facilitate deep relaxation, focused attention, or other desired states. Music, verbal guidance, or special sound effects are combined with Hemi-Sync signals to strengthen their effectiveness. These recordings do not contain subliminal messages. You are always in control. An album of various artists:
The Last of the Mohicans: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Beautifully orchestrated, tracks one through nine were composed by Trevor Jones, and his use of drums, brass, and strings to convey the sweeping saga of the movie is masterful and full of powerful, pulse pounding emotion. There is a seamless transition to tracks ten through fifteen which were composed by Randy Edelman and are likewise beautiful, but lighter and more ephemeral in tone. The music is more hopeful and mellow, yet at the same time wondrously melodic. The collaborative efforts of the two composers have produced a masterpiece. One of the most appealing talents among contemporary flamenco guitarists, Jesse Cook skillfully expands his discography with a spirited, satisfying recording (his fourth) that reconfirms his position as one of the elite composer/performers in the genre. Specializing in "rumba flamenco," Cook (born in Paris to Canadian parents) here embellishes his vibrant playing with well-crafted arrangements and imaginative instrumental colors. Good listening.
